My New Life, Thanks to LASIK – A Patient’s Story

Jeremy Epstein received LASIK in January 2013 from Sonny Goel, M.D. We caught up with Jeremy to find out why he made the decision, what the procedure was like and how he was doing more than a year later.

Why did you decide to have LASIK?

I noticed how frustrated I got managing my contacts and glasses. Waking up in the morning with my three young kids was a hassle. I’d just completed a Tough Mudder race, and my poor eyesight definitely added a whole layer of complexity to that. So, one day I posted on Facebook that I was thinking about getting LASIK. A friend of mine mentioned that he knew a LASIK surgeon, so I met with Dr. Goel, and after a few conversations, I decided to go for it.

What was the procedure like?

I was a little nervous, as I think anyone would be, but mostly just excited. I went in on a Thursday afternoon, and it only took a few minutes. Dr. Goel actually allowed me to live stream the procedure.

My mother came with me and drove me home, but the next morning, I got up and drove myself back to Dr. Goel’s office for a checkup. It was a fantastic feeling.

What did you think of your doctor and the practice?

Dr. Goel’s professionalism, warmth and confidence were immediately obvious, but the more I got to know him, the more impressed I became. He truly is someone who loves what he does. He cares so much, and that makes him great at his job. The rest of the office was the same, with every person I spoke to and every room I was in, the dedication and motivation on behalf of their patients was obvious.

This all sounds like marketing-speak, but I think it makes a real difference during a medical experience. If you feel safe and relaxed, it just makes sense that it can only help the outcome of your procedure.

What was the biggest surprise for you?

What surprised me most happened after the procedure. I knew it would be great, but it was better than I thought. Later that night, I woke up and looked at the stars. I saw them with a clarity that I hadn’t had maybe ever, but certainly not in a long, long time. I’m not normally a very emotional guy, but that was actually a spiritual experience for me.

How do you feel now?

Simply put, it’s a life-changing experience. Going swimming with my kids, for instance — I can do whatever they can, and I always know I’ll be able to see them.

Dr. Goel mentioned that people sometimes forget what it’s like — a few months after the procedure — not to have been able to see with this clarity, so I’ve made a concerted effort to find moments of gratitude. When I see other people dealing with the inconvenience of glasses or contacts, it really reminds me.

What would you tell someone who was considering LASIK?

People choose to save up and spend money on a lot of different things — like a vacation. Don’t get me wrong, a trip to Disney World is great, but this is something that will change every day of the rest of your life.

I believe that if people could experience virtual reality and spend a day with post-LASIK eyesight, no one would hesitate about getting the procedure for an instant.

It’s not hard to be positive about an experience that’s this entirely good. To me, it’s truly a no-brainer.
