Richard Maw, M.D. is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has performed over 37,000 LASIK procedures since 1999. He was fellowship-trained at the Harvard Medical School and received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Dr. Maw has been trusted to perform LASIK on friends, family, doctors, surgeons (including other eye surgeons), lawyers, military fighter pilots, commercial airline pilots, Olympic athletes, and professional athletes. He has also had LASIK himself.
He has performed extensive research in ophthalmology and published numerous articles in peer review journals. He has presented dozens of scientific papers on LASIK to the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Dr. Maw was among the first doctors in the world to prove that using larger optical zones during LASIK reduces the occurrence of night glare, and one of the first doctors in the Northeast to perform LASIK for hyperopia and hyperopia with astigmatism. He has participated in FDA monitored clinical trials for LASIK for hyperopia, LASIK for hyperopia with astigmatism, and scleral expansion band placement for the reversal of presbyopia with Dr. Soloway at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

All around amazing experience. I walked out of the office and could read the street signs. Savannah was amazing with all exams and the best hand holder around. Jamie was very informative and gave very direct and honest advice for after care including that it will feel like you have an eye lash in your eyes after so don’t rub! (20 hours later I realized there was actually an eye lash but didn’t know it. It naturally worked its way out thankfully!)

Great staff! Procedure was seamless! Jaime the receptionist was out of this world! Kept me up to date on the scheduling and helped me through the pre/post op so much. So worth it if you are on the fence and this is a great team in West Des Moines!
Such an amazing experience at LasikPlus DSM! I felt confident my care was in good hands from the first moment I walked in the door. All the staff were amazing and so friendly. I had my consult and scheduled the next week for my procedure. Dr Maw did great and made sure to talk me through it. Procedure was done yesterday and just had my follow up, already seeing 20/20!! Well worth the few hours of discomfort. If you’re considering Lasik here’s your motivation! DO IT!! ✨
