As the current Medical Director of Ophthalmology at Nellis Air Force Base and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the esteemed Uniformed Services University – known as “America’s Medical School”– Dr. Nelson brings an unparalleled depth of knowledge and skill to his practice.
With a medical school training in the Washington, DC area and Ophthalmology Residency completed in San Antonio, TX, Dr. Nelson embodies a commitment to excellence in eye care. The staff was friendly and very open to answering any questions. On day of surgery, I was certainly feeling nervous as anxiety built up. I arrived in the morning and there were a few people waiting. I probably sat down for less than 5 minutes and was already called in. The doctor who checked me in was very nice and reassuring to help calm my nerves. I then waited about 5 minutes before being called into the operating room. They have you watch a video of the process. The process: You are lead into a room and they explain the process again which is on the video they ask you to watch. I was directed to the first bed where they lay you down and prop your eyes open. Before doing so they put some drops in your eye to numb them (at least from what i remember). Then after a minute or so (it works quick) the dr lets you know they are propping the eyes open and there will be pressure. I won't lie, this was a bit uncomfortable but they do one eye at a time. He uses a tool to push down around the eye. This part of the process goes relatively quick as they are cutting the lid portion of the eye to create the flap. After both eyes are done, they guide you over to another bed where the laser is ready. They numb the eye a little more and this is when they peel back the flap the first machine created and clean then laser the eye to fix the sight. He then closes the flap and cleans and bubbles. Both eyes take less than a minute each maybe half the time from the first process. So it's very fast. I do want to warn that when they start to laser the eye, you can smell it. In fact during the ride home and sleeping if off, I could still smell the burnt. It was like a burned rubber smell to me. So after both eyes were done, it was over. They provide sunglasses and your vision is a little blurry when you leave so it's a good idea to have someone help you. You're instruct to sleep for 6 hrs and when you wake you'll be fine. There was slight pressure pain around the eyes but nothing too unbearable. After the 6 hrs of sleep, the pain was gone and the blurriness was gone. I'm just over 4 weeks after the procedure and feel good. There's still like a halo around lights at night but was told it may take some time before the halos disappear. I'm glad I did it and it helped that the doctor, during the procedure, was talking through each process the whole time which helped ease my mind as I was laying there.
The staff at LasikPlus are phenomenal and go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable before and during the procedure. I had to go back again for a readjustment/touchup on my right eye and it went even more smoothly than the first time around. Heal time was quick, the procedure itself was quick, and I'm now seeing 20/15. I highly recommend this team if you're looking to go glasses free!
