What is a Flying Spot Laser?
The phrase "flying spot laser" is typically associated with laser platforms like Bausch & Lomb. "Flying spot" refers to the self-aiming, multiple pulse laser system, that allows for larger treatment zones.
How Does a Flying Spot Laser Work?
The newest generation lasers use an innovative technology called "flying spot." A "flying spot" laser treats one tiny spot of the corneal treatment zone at a time, and then "flies" to the next treatment area. The cool beams are pulsed in tiny, non-overlapping spots all over the treatment zone, following a pattern controlled by the laser's computer. An eye tracking device is used to keep track of your eye movements, and to ensure the laser always falls on the correct location in the cornea. The multiple beams cover a slightly wider surface area, and will not penetrate as deep. This technology produces a smooth corneal shape and assures you a high level of accuracy during the surgery.
Will I Need a Flying Spot Laser?
Flying Spot lasers are typically prescribed to patients with varying degrees of Nearsightedness, Astigmatism, Farsightedness, and can best treat patients with larger-sized pupils. During your Free, Comprehensive Exam, your LASIK team will be able to tell you more about your individual needs and recommend the most appropriate laser and treatment to correct your vision.
